First glance and you’re wondering – “why?” The answer is far more practical than the comical shapes and proportions than these whimsical cars suggest. Post-World War II the shortage of materials could be felt in almost all corners of life. For many, buying a full-size car was far removed from the reality they were living. Alternatives to walking and public transportation included bicycle, a motorcycle, or a microcar. While bicycles and motorcycles make great options for short jaunts around the city, the cold and damp weather of many European countries can change the mind of even the most diehard riders. Microcars therefore filled a niche in the market. They allowed people to purchase a form of transportation that was within their budget and to remain shielded from the elements when the weather turned for the worse. Their uniqueness was born from necessity and when prosperity returned the public was more inclined to purchase full-size cars again.
