Morris Mini GT5 racecar – 1975

This purpose built race chassis was built to compete in SCCA’s Gt-5 class. The GT classes are for heavily modified versions of production cars and tube frame chassis built specifically for racing. Between 1980 and 2005, there were five GT-classes numbered 1-5, with engine displacement getting progressively smaller, GT-5 being the smallest class of 1.3L and below. In 2005, the GT-4 and GT-5 classes were combined into one class, GT Lite.

The chassis was originally built for Richard Kraus in the mid 1990s, after he won an SCCA National Championship at Road Atlanta in 1993. During its first track outing, the specially made driveshaft was improperly balanced and resulted in severe vibrations. Richard never raced the car again and it was sold to another owner who let it go without much use. Jeff Lane then purchased the car and had it restored and retrofitted with newer and lighter parts. It was later donated to Lane Motor Museum.
