Jowett Javelin Jupiter- 1951
Jowett was founded in 1901 in England by brother Benjamin and William Jowett, along with Arthur Lamb. They started in the cycle business and went on to make V-twin engines for driving machinery.
The streamlined Jowett Javelin saloon debuted in 1947. The Javelin touted modern features such as a flat-four push-rod engine, independent front suspension with front and rear torsion bars, and unitary body construction.
In 1950 the Javelin was joined by the Jowett Jupiter sports car, with a chassis designed by Eberan von Eberhorst who had worked for Auto Union. The car was praised for its lively acceleration and claimed 85 mph as its top speed, due in no small part to its 1400cc, overheard valve, flat-four engine, fitted with dual Zenith carburetors. The Jupiter was also touted for its quick and light steering and gear-change linkage, which was “unusually positive for a steering column layout”.
This 1951 Jupiter was lovingly restored by its previous owner, David Burroughs, of Pittsburg, PA. It is one of the first 150 made, and wears a “Javelin/Jupiter” badge that was later changed to “Jowett/Jupiter.”
