Citroën Ami- 2020

In a bid to expand Groupe PSA’s (Peugeot Société Anonyme) electric vehicle lineup, the all-electric, light quadricycle class Ami debuted on February 27th, 2020, in Paris, France. If the name Ami rings a bell, it’s because it harkens back to one of Citroën’s most successful vehicles, in production from 1961 to 1978. However, this modern rendition of the Ami represents a notable departure from its predecessor.
Engineered with affordability in mind, the Ami showcases a distinctive symmetrical design, facilitating the interchangeability of all body panels except the roof. Notably, this revolutionary design extends to the Ami’s doors; while the passenger door operates conventionally, the driver’s door opens in a distinctive “suicide style”, enhancing the Ami’s character. Alongside the interchangeable doors, both the front and rear facia panels mirror each other, housing headlights and taillights in their respective positions.
Unlike its predecessor, the new Ami holds a classification as a light quadricycle in France, which allows for this small vehicle to be driven by persons born before 1988 without a license and by anyone over the age of 14 with an AM license (European Union driver’s license). This classification also grants the Ami certain liberties, permitting manufacturers to conform to less stringent regulations concerning weight, power, and speed.
Despite its classification as a quadricycle, the Ami stands out for its innovation and utility, making it a compelling option for urban commuters and eco-conscious consumers alike. Through the Ami, Citroën not only reimagines electric mobility but also pays homage to its rich automotive legacy, bridging the gap between past and future with a vehicle that embodies innovation and accessibility in equal measure.
