Charles Mochet was France’s best known maker of pedal cars as a practical means of transportation for adults. He saw the advantage of designing a car where the rider could use the force of pushing against a back rest rather than relying on body weight to push down with gravity. The Velocar, designed with two sets of pedals for both driver and passenger, was made from 1927 until well into World War II. The Type H which you see here is a simple 2 seat vehicle powered by a 100cc single-cylinder Zurcher engine, with auxiliary pedals. There is no separate starter–one pedaled and engaged the engine. It has bicycle wheels with the rear having brakes. There is also a separate handbrake. A full top and side curtains were an optional feature.
