The Vanguard Citicar was America's answer to the oil crises of 1973 and was produced from 1974 until 1976.  In 1977, the company was sold.  Frank Flowers purchased most of the production line and parts, redesigned the vehicle, and named it the Comuta-car. The Comuta-car had a number of refinements over the Citicar including a larger motor (5hp and 8hp), glass side windows, larger crash bumpers, and a functioning hatchback.  The Comuta-car plugs into 110 volt outlet to charge the eight batteries which are located in the front and rear bumpers.  The driving range is 30 to 40 miles.  By mid-1980, the gas crisis was over and gas prices had lowered.  Although auto companies were beginning to talk about developing electric (battery) technology, most people were reluctant to change their driving habits.  This was a car ahead of its time.
