Lane Motor Museum's Microcar Meet

May 23-25, 2014

Join us in Nashville, TN for a Microcar Meet that will take place May 23-25, 2014 (Memorial Day Weekend).

The event will start on Friday afternoon with a tour to Percy Priest Lake with rides in the museum's Amphicar (weather permitting).  Saturday's events include a car show at the museum, followed by a tour of downtown Nashville, only 3.5 miles from the museum.  On Sunday we will take another tour of the area, retuning to the museum for a Microcar gymkhana in the afternoon and dinner that evening.  The event will end Monday morning at 9:00 am when we send off the Route 66 Vespa group from the museum.

Come spend a weekend at the museum and get the chance to see our 400 car collection (of which about 100 are micro cars).  We also have approximately 60 motorcycles in the collection.

NOTE:  You are welcome to participate even if you do not have or do not plan to bring your micro car.  All we ask on the tours is that the micro cars go first and then the modern cars follow.  On the tours we will have a rescue van and trailer following the tour.

Registration Fee: $35 per car; $25 per person for Sunday dinner (optional).

(Please note- MAY 19 will be the last day for registration!)

Join us on Friday, April 26 from 6-9pm as we welcome a very special guest who will be visiting from France to speak at our member's reception – Claude Guéniffey, president of the Helica Club and the world's foremost expert on propeller-driven cars and Marcel Leyat. Claude is the person who found the original plans and thousands of other documents in Meursault, France in 2004. Since then, Claude has put on five exhibits (all in France) focusing on Marcel Leyat.

2013 is the 100th Anniversary of Leyat's first propeller-driven car. In recognition of that milestone Claude is creating an exhibit for Lane Motor Museum about Marcel Leyat's achievements. This will be a very rare opportunity to see Claude's presentation in the U.S.

In honor of our special guest we will be serving an assortment of European wine & cheese!

Lane-1936-Delahaye-wcreditWe are proud to be part of an amazing new exhibit coming this summer to the Frist Center in downtown Nashville! Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles is an exhibition of Art Deco automobiles from some of the most renowned car collections in the United States.

Inspired by the Frist Center’s historic Art Deco building, this exhibition will feature spectacular automobiles and motorcycles from the 1930s and ‘40s that exemplify the classic elegance, luxurious materials, and iconography of motion that characterizes vehicles influenced by the Art Deco style.

Special reciprocal offer: Throughout the run of Sensuous Steel, Nashville's Frist Center and the Lane Motor Museum will offer reciprocal admission discounts when tickets stubs are presented. Just bring your ticket stub from whichever museum you visit first to the other museum, and receive a discount (half-price discount at the Frist Center, and $3 discount at Lane Motor Museum).

Fascination with automobiles transcends age, gender, and environment.  While today automotive manufacturers often strive for economy and efficiency, there was a time when elegance reigned.  Influenced by the Art Deco movement that began in Paris in the early 1920s and propelled to prominence with the success of the International Exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in 1925, automakers embraced the sleek new streamlined forms and aircraft-inspired materials, creating memorable automobiles that still thrill all who see them. The exhibition will feature 18 automobiles and two motorcycles from some of the most important collectors and collections in the United States.

Sensuous Steel is organized for the Frist Center by guest curator Ken Gross, former director of the Petersen Automotive Museum. Gross served as guest curator for The Allure of the Automobile, a nationally acclaimed exhibition displayed at Atlanta’s High Museum of Art in 2010; additionally, he developed a revised version of the exhibition for the Portland Art Museum the following year. Most recently, Gross curated Speed: The Art of the Performance Automobile exhibited at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts in Salt Lake City and the opening exhibition for LeMay–America’s Car Museum in Tacoma, Wash. A highly respected automotive journalist for over 40 years, Gross writes for numerous publications including  AutoWeek, Playboy, Hagerty’s Magazine, Sports Car Market, Motor Trend Classic, Popular Mechanics, msnautos.com, Old Cars Weekly, and The Rodder’s Journal. A noted authority on automobiles, he has judged at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance for 24 years. Gross also judges at the Amelia Island Concours and was the Chief Judge at the Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance. Additionally, Gross has received many awards including the 2009 IAMA Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2009 Lee Iacocca Award, the 2008 Washington Auto Press “Golden Quill Award,” the Society of Automotive Historians’ “Cugnot Award,” and “The James Valentine Memorial Award” for excellence in automotive historical research.

An illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
