Ducati 996-2000

Ducati 996-2000

In 1950 Ducati built its first motorcycle.  This bike had a displacement of 60 cc and weighed 98 pounds, and top speed was 40 mph.  By 1960 Ducati had made history by producing the fastest 250 cc road bike of the period.  The 996 was based on the 916, the first in a long line of high performance V-twin motorcycles.  One of the most unique features of the 996 is that it has a Desmodromic valve system.  This simply means that instead of the valves being closed by valve springs, there is one camshaft to open the valves and one camshaft to close the valves.  The Ducati line of motorcycles continues to this day to be some of the most innovative, most desired, and fastest ever produced
