Motobécane was a French manufacturer of bicycles, mopeds, and motorcycles established in 1923. Motobécane came from two slang words: “Moto” for motor and “bécane” for bike. The company was a success and during the 1970s owned Velosolex. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1984, was purchased by Yamaha Motor Company, Ltd., and was reformed in 1984 as MBK. By 1999, MBK hadproduced one million scooters. The MBK is actually a scooter styled to look like a racing bike. This was done to appeal to a rider who wanted a “flashier” look than a scooter offers. This bike is very easy to ride as it has an automatic transmission and requires no shifting. The larger engine improves the performance over a scooter.
MBK continues to produce racing bikes.
