David Austin Hillclimb- 2000

This car was built by David Austin to compete in S.C.C.A. hillclimbs and autocrosses. The concept of the car began with acquisition of a good motor from a wrecked motorcycle. A wooden mock-up was built before this light, 600 pound, aluminum model. The design included a crushable nose and side pods to withstand impact. The narrow nose allows for only gas and brake pedals–the hand clutch is located on the gear shift lever. The construction techniques are typical of aircraft construction as Austin is a very talented aircraft mechanic. When construction of this vehicle began, Austin did not have a garage to work in so he built it in a spare bedroom of his house. As he knew it would be difficult to remove the finished car, he built it in three 30 inch long sections–front, center, and rear. Once removed from the house, they were bolted together.
